There’s a place in Hopewell Hill where the coffee is on, the cribbage boards are out, and someone is probably learning to crochet right now. It’s called Caledonia Activity Place, CAP for short, and if you haven’t heard of it yet, that’s exactly the problem they’re working to fix.
CAP is a community activity centre run by and for people living with mental illness, with a focus on mental health promotion and prevention. Programs are based on local needs and interests, and the whole idea is to help people become more independent through peer support, education, and mutual aid. Bridge the gapp But honestly, the easiest way to describe it is this: it’s a welcoming place where people connect, learn things, and have a good time doing it.
Activity Director Beverly Terris hit the ground running in 2025, launching a Coffee House every Wednesday morning from 11 to 2, followed by Crib and Crokinole afternoons on Thursdays from 1 to 3. What started as a “Learning to Crochet” series evolved into the Stitchers’ Club, which now meets every second Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30. Connectingalbertcounty It’s part craft circle, part social hour, and entirely the kind of thing a rural community needs more of.
The year didn’t stop there. Paint days, a family craft day building wind chimes, a Halloween movie night featuring Casper, Bingo for Chocolate, wreath-making in December, a Kitchen Party as part of the CCRC Neighbourhood Socials program Connectingalbertcounty, CAP showed up all year, for all kinds of people. They even made their debut at the Albert County Exhibition, which Beverly called a huge success for getting their name out to Fundy Albert residents. Connectingalbertcounty
Here’s what makes CAP worth paying attention to: in a rural area where isolation is a real challenge, especially in the long months between November and April, having somewhere to go matters. Having someone who knows your name matters. Having a reason to leave the house on a Wednesday evening matters more than most of us admit.
For 2026, CAP is planning Wellness Socials starting in late February, more craft and painting events, and they’re open to hearing what the community wants to see. Connectingalbertcounty That’s not a token gesture, they genuinely mean it.
